An Incredible Prayer I Pray For My Kids

I have prayed more prayers than I can count over my kids.  I have always prayed for my kids to have a true walking relationship with Jesus Christ.  That is the most important and powerful prayer I think I can pray for them.  I have prayed for their sexual purity as well as for their future spouse and their sexual purity.  I have prayed for their safety.  I have prayed for them to be able to resist temptation when they are faced with it.  I have prayed and prayed over my kids as I am sure all of us have.

I have in the last year or so been praying one of the most incredible prayers I have ever prayed for my kids.  I have been praying the following prayer:

"If my kids commit a sin, I pray they will by some means be found out."

The extended form of this prayer is they will tell someone who will tell Carl or me.  A friend of ours will see them or catch them in a sin.  We will pass by where they are not supposed to be.  You name it.  There are a slew of ways they can be found out, but you get the idea.

I cannot begin to express how powerful this prayer has been in our lives.  It is very similar to a bible verse in the Bible.  Numbers 32:23 (ESV) says, "But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the Lord, and be sure your sin will find you out."

God has showed Himself so faithful in this.  I have to admit that I did not see it that way at first.  When I find out my children have sinned in some way, my first reaction is hurt.  I am not the kind of person who usually goes immediately to feelings of anger.  When I discover my child's sin, I usually go to feelings of hurt, sadness, disappointment, to tears, or even blaming myself for not being a good enough parent.

I am not saying I don't feel those feelings of hurt or disappointment, but now when I find out a sin, one of the first things I try to do is go to God in prayer to thank Him for answering my prayer.  I thank Him, because He has been faithful to me and also He has been faithful to my kids.  He has not given up on us as parents or on them.

Whenever I find out something, I usually always remind my kids of my prayer, and the fact their sin will find them out.  I wish I could tell you all of the ways in which God has been faithful and ways He has allowed us as parents to find out what is going on with our kids.  However, I will not shame them.  Just know that they are not perfect kids, and I am not a perfect parent.  They struggle with common sins most other kids struggle with at their age, and most of which Carl and I were both guilt of at the same age.  We all have fallen short of the glory of God as stated in Romans 3:23.

We are all sinners who sin even when we are trying to do the right thing.  Our only hope is that we have been covered by the grace and righteousness of Jesus Christ.  Our children are sinners too who sin even when they are trying to do what is right.  They too have been covered with the grace and righteousness of Jesus Christ if they repent and turn away from their sin.

I encourage you to pray this over your children, but don't be surprised when God answers your prayer.  You may have a variety of feelings about what your child has done, but just know that God has been faithful to answer your prayer to address the sin.  He is also big enough to get you through it and to forgive them of all of their sins.  What a great God we have!

"For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to the light." Luke 8:17
